“I have struggled with my weight for my entire life. I was obese as a teenager, but was able to lose 60 pounds in my early 20s with literally no effort (just walking to and from school). My weight continued to fluctuate throughout my 20s. I entered my 30s at a healthy weight, but then gained roughly 30 pounds. I was only 20 pounds away from my heaviest. I hated exercise, but occasionally made myself do cardio. It wasn’t enough, though.

In the summer of 2016, I hired Kim to be my trainer, deciding that I needed someone to teach me exactly how to exercise. She worked with me a lot on balance in our first couple of weeks, and at first, I thought it would be a waste of time (sorry Kim!), but I was wrong. (More on that later.) She spent many sessions with me, week after week, teaching me proper form for everything from bicep curls to lat pulldowns to squats.

During our first year together, I dealt with setback after setback, including deaths in my family, injury, vacations, and surgery, but she never stopped encouraging me and being there for me.

When my life finally calmed down, I realized that I needed a set goal of competing in a fitness competition. When I told Kim about my idea, she was nothing but supportive and immediately started thinking of a strategy for my new goal.

So a little over a year since hiring Kim, I’ve learned that I love lifting weights, I actually enjoy doing cardio, and I took my first yoga class in years this weekend and was able to perfectly do each movement with no assistance. My balance has improved immeasurably, and while I used to be clumsy and trip over nothing all the time, I find that never happens anymore.

As for numbers, I’m down 20 pounds since we started working together, and have lost 12 percent body fat as of our last measurement. I also feel more confident in and out of the gym, and you can’t really put a price on that.
